Navigating the Screen Age with Empathy
Completely banning devices often backfires, making screens even more tempting. The real goal is teaching your child self-regulation and intentional usage.
1. The 1-Hour "No-Phone Zone" Before Bed
Blue light emitted by smartphones disrupts melatonin production, interfering with deep sleep. Keep mobile phones and tablets out of children’s bedrooms at night to improve morning focus in class.
2. Differentiate Between "Creation" and "Consumption"
Not all screen time is equal. Spending 45 minutes coding, reading an eBook, or watching a documentary is mentally engaging; scrolling short video feeds for two hours is passive and tiring. Encourage creative and educational screen use.
3. Lead by Example
Children mirror adult behavior. If parents check social media at the dinner table, kids assume constant connectivity is normal. Designate meals and family conversations as device-free moments.
